The penny has finally dropped for Barca as they turn to youth
Brazil forward Malcom has passed his medical ahead of a €41 million move from Bordeaux. The highly rated, dynamic playmaker has been linked with a move for a while now.
For him to land such a huge move at twenty-one is massive. However it is also yet another statement of intent from Barcelona.
Their last few major signings have been geared around moving away from their old, ageing core.
The cycle of their great team, engineered by Pep Gaurdiola, is over. And yet ageing players have been allowed to stay on big contracts as the club has watched on as Real Madrid dominate Europe.
Pique, Mascherano, Messi, Rakatic, Suarez and Busquets, it’s a talented, but ageing core. Iniesta’s recent departure though was the beginning of this problem being addressed.
Their huge outlays on Dembele and Coutinho show they are now focused on bringing a next generation on at the Nou Camp.
Malcom is a tricky, speedy winger/forward. Able to play the ball at speed as well as chip in with goals, he will likely prove a big hit at the Catalan giants.
An ageing side is a cue card for failure. Manchester United suffered from this under David Moyes.
Barcelona will hope they are now adequately building away from this problem and gearing up to challenge their bitter rivals on the continent once more.
